I knew I was in trouble, real trouble, from the moment our eyes made contact. I’m probably more helpless right now than I was when Pat’s van first pulled up behind me, but this is a different kind of trouble. With each passing second I feel myself falling deeper and deeper under Brian’s seductive spell. I never realized it before, but there ain’t nothing better than a fine-ass, young country boy. Something in his stare tells me that he wants to do a lot more than simply fix my flat and help me get back on the road. I bet Brian would like to finish our conversation later. I think we’re both curious to see where this whole thing is gonna lead us. Being curious like that isn’t exactly a bad thing. As a matter of fact, it’s natural.

I need a friend like Brian. Oh, just listen to me, sounding like a little slut. I should have seen this coming. Serena warned me that I would meet a nice guy like this. Even Craig knew I’d eventually meet a guy like Brian. I was cursed from day one. Got Momma to thank for that. Infidelity must run in our family. But Brian is so fine that I just saw a vision of Momma’s smile of approval and her giving me a big thumbs-up. Never got a vision like that from her when it came to Craig. This is the green light I was looking for and now I got both feet on the gas.

“If you ever get a flat in an area like this when you’re alone, you should keep on driving till you get to a service station or a payphone ‘cause it’s not safe out here in the middle of nowhere. You had already driven on the tire when it was flat and you destroyed the side-wall. You’re gonna need a brand new tire.”

“I don’t care. As long as I’m safe, that’s what matters.”

“Yeah, I’d hate to think of what might have happened to you out here with that weirdo.”

“I know, but thank God you’re here with me.”

“God is good.”

“All the time.”

“And all the time … God is good.”

“That’s true. You got me smiling.”

The smell of fresh tobacco leaves isn’t the only thing in the air. A high dose of excitement is also present. I was too preoccupied to notice before, but I just realized that there’s a full moon out tonight. Beautiful. It hangs high, illuminating the night sky along with the bright yellow flashing tow truck lights in front of me. The mosquitoes are gone and now the crickets are singing a much more pleasant song. The cool night air is just as refreshing and liberating as the breeze I felt through my bedroom window the other afternoon in the midst of the storm.

Brian’s all finished putting on my spare tire. Neither one of us wants this to end. I think that’s why he was taking his time changing my tire. We both lean against my car, staring at each other during a brief moment of silence.
